We're trying to put out good baseball, so we're going to sign up for competitive tournaments."Īt the organization's first official tryout Wednesday, 21 kids tried out for the 12U team, while an additional 16 tried out for 10U. "We'll be mostly playing in high-quality tournaments. We're looking to maybe host a tournament next year, but we'll mostly be playing in the Canton and Detroit area, and we'll go to Ohio and Indiana in April for a couple of tournaments," he said. We're not looking to change the way Midland does baseball, but we did need a good, solid (travel baseball) program in town, and the Explorers was a good fit," he added.įaccio said that Explorers teams will begin playing tournaments next April and that those tournaments most often will be competitive USSSA events in southeastern Michigan and even across the border.

"It's a really good opportunity (to help local baseball grow), and we're excited about it. "We want to put together good, solid baseball teams and to feed Midland High and Dow High with good, quality players. We will work with our local Little League (programs) to be as schedule-friendly as possible," he said, adding that he views Explorers baseball as a sort of feeder to Midland's high schools. "We're not going to come in and be an enemy of Little League. "We'll encourage kids to play basketball, soccer, or whatever they want to do as long as they can play for us, too."įaccio emphasized that Explorers baseball is not meant to compete with Little League in any way, and he said that the organization will do its best to schedule its practices and tournaments so that they will not interfere with Little League. We want to build well-rounded athletes who will succeed in other sports, too. But we don't want kids to play strictly baseball. We want hard-working kids, just all-out baseball players," he said. In fact, he would discourage specialization in only baseball.

We want to teach the kids responsibility and how to play the game the right way."įaccio said that he and his fellow Explorers coaches will be seeking young players who are passionate about baseball, but he doesn't expect them to neglect other sports. "We're going to be building not just good baseball players but also good individuals. And we want to develop young men who are leaders and community-minded (citizens)," he added. We have a good coaching staff starting up, (guys) with college experience and a lot of knowledge," Faccio said. "We want to get them ready for the next level (high school ball) and teach them some things that maybe an average (youth) coach can't teach them.

"But right now, we have two really solid teams."Īccording to Faccio, the goal of the organization is to help kids not only become better baseball players but also better people. "We want to start small and build up our brand (and eventually add several more more age levels)," Faccio said. Faccio is the manager of the 12U team, while Blake Benner, who also played baseball at Midland High and for Berryhill, will manage the 10U team.

"Midland is a very good baseball town with a lot of tradition."Ĭurrently, the Explorers baseball organization has only two teams - a 12U and a 10U. If you look around the area, you see a lot of competitive travel (baseball) organizations in Saginaw, Bay City, and Flint, and Midland doesn't have one.
